Gas line repair and installation in the Portland metro

Gas line work is not a do-it-yourself job, and in Oregon it requires a licensed plumber and usually a permit and inspection. A plumber who does gas work is certified for it, and the work is signed off before the meter goes back on.
When you need a gas line pro
- A gas smell. Leave the building first and call the utility's emergency line. Once it's safe, you need a plumber to find and fix the leak.
- A new appliance. Ranges, dryers, fireplaces, and outdoor grills all need a line sized and run correctly.
- Converting from electric. Switching a range, dryer, or furnace to gas means a new line and often a permit.
- An old or undersized line. If a line can't keep up, the fixture starves and the flame is weak.
What the work involves
New runs start at the meter and follow the local code for pipe sizing, shutoffs, and bonding. A proper job means a pressure test and, in most jurisdictions around the metro, a permit and a final inspection. The plumber handles the paperwork and the test as part of the job.
Safety first
If you smell gas, don't flip switches or use a phone inside. Get everyone out, then call your gas utility's emergency number from outside. A repair comes after the utility makes the area safe, not before.
